I'm currently studying Business Studies in Ngee Ann Polytechnic. Many are surprised by the stark difference between my interests and the course I'm taking.
However, I chose to pursue this diploma above others such as Film & Media Studies is because firstly, Business Studies is versatile. Learning this course allows me to pick up various skills that could be used in many areas such as design thinking, critical thinking etc. allowing me to be versatile in the jobs I can do. Secondly, Business Studies also teaches me how to run a business, the economics, and the law behind it as well, such that I could even run my own business in the future if I so desire. Lastly, it is also a good safety net. Frankly, it is hard to say that I will definitely succeed in this industry. Thus, Business Studies acts as a diploma that I can fall back on if all else fails in the worst case scenario.
A dream of mine is that I want to create content that does not contend with the current trends of the high-quantity, low-effort content of today, especially in YouTube, content that leaves a lasting impact on people rather than a short dopamine boost. Creators like Yes Theory, Drew Simms, and Elliot Lee are those that really puts in a lot of effort in their long-form content. However, due to algorithms and all, they are not getting the returns that they deserve.
I hope to see myself interning at a film studio, maybe a small one. Creating marketing content for businesses and having fun. Perhaps travelling and documenting, or cinematic filmmaking.
